About Sustainable Fishmonger

Sustainable Fishmonger is the nonprofit arm of Flying Fish Company in Portland, Oregon. Our mission is to educate people to bring a more mindful and sustainable approach to food through hands on learning, training, and food experiences worldwide. We offer field trips, adventures, beach cleanups, and environmental activism to protect our natural resources and sustain our livelihood.

Flying Fish president Lyf Gildersleeve is an active participant in fisheries policy and advocacy for conservation of our precious resources. He currently serves on the West Coast Fisheries Council on the highly migratory advisory subpanel, is a policy advisor for Marine Fish Conservation Network, and participates in nonprofit efforts like Save Our Wild Salmon and Businesses for Conservation & Climate Action

    Thanks for doing this. Question…with so many invasive shad coming up and over the dams these days, got any tips for what to do with them? Besides crab bait or fish sauce? Thanks!

    1. thanks for the comment. Honestly i haven’t done anything with that fish myself. I have a friend who has canned them and that makes it so you don’t have to take out the bones, they kinda dissolve when you can them. Aside from that, I’m not sure. Cheers lyf
